If you think you or someone you know might have dystonia, you should go to your doctor. The doctor can order tests to see if you have one of the genes known to cause dystonia. You can provide important medical information for your doctor or a neurologist to determine whether or not you have dystonia, and what type you might have.
There is currently no known cure for dystonia, although there are several different forms of treatment. After more progress has been made in genetics and altering the genetic makeup of a person, some neurologists like Dr. Susan Bressman, of the Beth Israel Medical Center in New York, hope to find a way to help cure dystonia in this way. This may take many years to complete, but if such a cure is found then dystonia will be less of a problem in so many people. As for right now, we can only hope for such a miracle, and thank the neurologists and doctors who are devoting so much of their time to this research.
